Here the legs are connected together by the bottom shelf. The slots in the legs mate with the slots in the bottom shelf. The slots are cut tight enough that no glue is needed for a stable structure. Once the legs were assembled, jess and daniel would find that the lip was too wide, and the lip would not connect correctly to the slots in the top of the legs...
