[the lip]

This underhang was the first piece they assembled. it was known as "the lip" during construction. General stupidity and/or bad planning caused this part to fail to connect correctly with the rest of the table. they would later take the lip apart again, and cut an additional two inches off of the shorter sides before reassembling it. The corners are fastened with small brass L-brackets on the inside of the lip. The top came next...
